Who's A Fly Bird?
’Who’s A Fly Bird?’ intercuts between three portraits of three disparate people dressed interpretively as birds in three disconnected locations to project a colourful, unique and sustainable vision for the future of fashion. Directed by Bianca Tomchin and Mathew Harvey.
Bianca Tomchin is a passionate Writer/Director and Designer as well as a recent graduate from Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS). With 15 years of training at Australia’s most elite dance schools, Bianca’s work revolves around high-energy movement. When Bianca was not dancing, she was more than often fossicking through op-shops or council chuckouts. These influences fed into Bianca’s winning concept for ‘The Future of Fashion’ competition, in which Bianca and co-director Mathew Harvey were awarded a grant to make their film ‘Who’s A Fly Bird?’ from AFTRS and the Sherman Centre for Culture and Ideas. As well as co-directing the piece, Bianca designed and made it’s featured upcycled costumes, drawing attention to the way various materials can be recycled in a innovative way, Bianca’s costumes were featured at SCCI’s Fashion Hub 2018.
Mathew Harvey is a director working in film and VR, and is a recent graduate of the Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS). Growing up doing ballet in outback Australia, Mathew’s screen work is concerned with rhythm within the frame, it is strikingly colourful, surreal, and abundant. With co-director Bianca Tomchin, Mathew won the 2018 Future Of Fashion Film Competition for the short film ‘Who’s A Fly Bird?’ hosted by the Sherman Institute for Culture and Ideas (SCCI) in association with AFTRS, judged by Dr Gene Sherman Chairperson of SCCI, Oscar winning producer Emile Sherman (The King’s Speech (2010)), and Neil Peplow, CEO, AFTRS. During his studies Mathew has worked for the Australian Directors Guild (ADG), interned on Palme d’Or winner Jane Campion’s Top of the Lake (2016), and was one of two student representatives selected by AFTRS to represent the institution at the Australian Government’s 2016 ARTS8: the Australian Roundtable for Arts Training Excellence Collaboration Lab.
